Chancellor's Message

by: France A Cordova   (January 2005)

Dear Friends of UC Riverside,

As UC Riverside enters a new quarter, I reflect on our achievements this past summer and fall and see that this academic year has already been both exciting and productive. This fall we welcomed 4,900 new students to the campus and, during the course of this year, 50 new faculty members will arrive. They are all very prominent scholars in their fields and they will further enrich UCR’s stimulating academic environment.

During this time, UCR’s senior leadership team was also completed with the arrival of three exceptional individuals. Joining the campus on July 1 were Ellen Wartella, as executive vice chancellor and provost, and Charles F. Louis, as vice chancellor for research. Dr. Wartella came to UCR from the University of Texas. Her impact is already being felt as we work collaboratively with the academic community to realize UCR’s vision and goals. Having held senior administrative research positions at Georgia State University and the University of Minnesota, Dr. Louis brings vast experience in research administration. He will lead UC Riverside on an accelerated trajectory with respect to new discovery, invention and sponsorship of research.

Arriving to campus in the fall was William G. Boldt, as vice chancellor for university advancement. Dr. Boldt served as vice president for advancement at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where he led the first comprehensive campaign in the history of the CSU system to raise more than $250 million. He will provide critical leadership for our own $50 million Evolutions Campaign, as well as our initiatives in alumni relations, advocacy and communications.

We have raised more than $36 million to date toward our $50 million goal. We are both blessed and proud to be associated with so many individuals, foundations and corporations that, through their generous gifts, demonstrate a shared commitment to excellence in teaching and research, and to the engagement of UC Riverside in the community. These partnerships, made possible by the generosity of those listed in the Honor Roll of Donors in this issue of Fiat Lux, were recently celebrated during our fifth annual Evening of Recognition Gala. This event recognizes our Chancellor’s Associates, Benefactors and Laureates for their continued philanthropic leadership, which provides much-needed scholarships, endowed chairs, academic program support and research funds to our rapidly expanding campus.

In this issue we feature one of UCR’s most distinguished alumni, Arthur D. Riggs, who is widely known in the scientific community for breakthroughs that underpinned the development of several life-saving drugs. Accomplishments such as those achieved by Dr. Riggs bring great distinction to UCR and remind us of the important educational role of the campus in shaping the leaders of tomorrow.

I hope that you as alumni and friends of UC Riverside are as proud as I am of this special campus. I wish to visit with as many of you as possible during the events we have planned this year, both on campus and throughout the nation. I also invite you to share your viewpoints, ideas, concerns and suggestions on the new “Dear Chancellor” Web site, which can be accessed at the Web address below.
